It's that time of year again! The annual Amsterdam Light Festival returned on November 30th, 2017, and will be displayed until January 21st, 2018. This marks the fifth edition of the event, where Dutch and International artists, designers and architects exhibit their stunning light installations and sculptures around Amsterdam's famed Canal Ring, Amstel River, and Marineterrein Amsterdam.
The Amsterdam Light Festival is a celebration of light art, which has become more popular due to the advent of LED. This years' theme is 'Existential' is a great platform to feature work from varied creatives like Chinese contemporary artist, Ai Weiwei to collaborations with primary school students.
The festival is comprised of art installations on both water and land. While it is possible to view these exhibitions on your own, I highly recommend taking one of the many guided Canal, Bike or Walking Tours to get the most out of the experience. Groupon is an excellent way to secure a discounted price. We used a Groupon offered by BoatAmsterdam.com who accommodated us last minute, included drinks in the price (I had the mulled wine which was perfect on a chilly night) and gave us information on each installation. As an added plus, the tour guides were informative, patient with questions, and had a great sense of humor.
The Water exposition is viewable daily from 5 pm to 11 pm, November 30th, 2017 through January 21st, 2018 located at the Canal Ring. The Land exposition is viewable daily 5 pm to 10 pm, December 14th, 2017 through January 7th, 2018 at the Marineterrein Amsterdam, near Amsterdam Central Station. Take advantage of the many dine and drink recommendations and additional activities at museums and theaters.
If you're an artist interested in participating in the 2018-2019 Festival, hurry and request an artist briefing. The Amsterdam Light Festival holds a Call of Concepts every year and accepts proposals both locally and worldwide. The deadline for 2018-2019 submissions for 'The Medium is the Message' theme is January 18th, 2018 (also known as Stephanie's Birthday).
