Verzetsmusem: The Netherlands in the Second World War

February 5, 2018

Verzetsmuseum tells the story of how the Dutch people endured a Nazi Germany occupied Netherlands during World War II between 1940 and 1945. The themed question around the museum is “What are you doing? "To Adjust, Participate, or Move”.

There are events where people are placed in a horrifying position, and they adjust because they see no other way. Others participate for ideological reasons. Then there are those that make moves, despite the situation they are in, to try and make a difference. Whichever reaction one may have in an oppressive situation, we have a say in the role we play in this world.

Through reconstructed streets, photographs, artifacts, documents, and film, the Verzetsmuseum exhibition brings alive a depiction of Dutch society in the thirties and the increasing grim reality of a German occupied Netherlands in the forties. The museum divides the occupation into five periods, denoted by “turning points", which highlights Dutch resistance attitudes during the February Strike, April-May Strike, and the Allied invasion in Normandy.

The most human aspect of the exhibition is that there is no conjecture regarding heroes and villains. It only attempts to illustrate how ordinary Dutch people managed, endured and overcame during a time of great challenge and strife.

If you'd like to view this exhibit, head over to the Dutch Resistance Museum, located in Plantage area of Centrum.
