Are you a freelancer in Amsterdam without a formal office in search of a spot where you can chill out, get a bite to eat and plug away? Never fear, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re a digital nomad, writer, or a marketer like me, there are several cafes in Amsterdam that welcome what I call, “shared workspace culture”. After ditching the stay-at-home mentality, I scouted establishments throughout the city that have wi-fi and are laptop-friendly. Keep reading for the list of suitable locations I’ve compiled for my fellow entrepreneurs. Hey, we’ve got to stick together! I can vouch for each venue on the list as I’ve personally sat at each one for at least four hours. All the places selected offer beverages and light fare, have wi-fi, and most importantly, the staff doesn’t give you the evil eye after you’ve been there for a few hours.
Oud-West neighborhood café Local Hero boasts a bright and airy environment that makes the sometimes arduous creative process a little more pleasant. There are several long tables, and open wi-fi but not a lot of outlets, so charge your device before you go. Enjoy the waitress service and try the peas soup, it’s Ah-Maz-ing!

Head to Pllek in Amsterdam-Noord Wharf area and get your creative juices flowing while you take in the post-industrial vibe of the former shipyard turned up-and-coming cultural hotspot. Constructed of old shipping containers, overlooking the waterfront, Pllek is an excellent alternative to the monotony of toiling at home. Indulge in their mainly vegetarian menu while tackling your to-do list, there’s open wi-fi and the second level has seating near outlets appropriate for laptops. The NDSM Amsterdam cafe/restaurant also hosts an array of live music, international films, art exhibitions, and mini-festivals. Be sure to take advantage of the lovely outdoor terrace during the summer months.

RUM BABA CAFE
Tucked away in Amsterdam Oost, Rum Baba has a comfortable, shabby chic environment conducive to zoning out and getting down to business. I don't often find myself this far east. However, the relaxed setting and staff’s super friendly demeanor has me traveling occasionally. Make sure to try the lekker specialty teas imported directly from China as you trudge on.

Popular Oud-West hipster haunt, Coffee Room, on the corner of Kinkerstraat and Bilderdijkkade is another great gathering place for freelancers. On the second level, there’s a large table perfect for laptops, as well as laptop-free zone seating for those that wish to socialize. It can get crowded mid-morning, and the wi-fi is a tad slow. However, they have yummy breakfast and lunch offerings, and there a communal work culture that never fails to inspire.

If you're looking for a cozy hideaway to accomplish some tasks in De Jordaan, head on over to Koffie Spot. This neighborhood treasure, located on Elandsgracht is ideal for getting through your checklist while sipping coffee, a healthy fresh squeezed juice, or tea. Yes, it's small and only has a few outlets, but the food is delicious, wi-fi is stable, and the staff is the best.
Elandsgracht 53, 1016 TN Amsterdam
Open daily: Monday – Friday 8 am – 6 pm, Saturday 9 am – 6pm, and Sunday 10 am – 6pm
Situated on a quiet street near Leidseplein in Centrum, rests Bocca’s Flagship store. It’s a choice place for independently-employed patrons to labor while savoring Bocca’s own label coffee and delightful pastries. Space is plentiful, the wi-fi code is available with a purchase, and the number of outlets is sufficient. Laptops are welcome during the weekday but note that there is a no laptop policy Saturday and Sunday. Make sure to peruse the photo series by Menno Simons of their harvest time in Ethiopia. The photos are available for purchase and all proceeds benefit Suko Quto School Project.

STARBUCKS LABROATORY | THE BANK
One of my favored spots is Starbucks Laboratory in Rembrandtplein. This location, in a historic bank vault, is Starbucks' first Concept Store in Europe. Aiming to cultivate a cultural meeting place, the multi-level layout can double as a stage for local bands, and poetry readings. It's an optimal place to tackle an assignment with ample space for customers, outlets at almost every seat, and open wi-fi. Oh, and the pastries are baked on site, and the coffee, which is brewed with the innovative Clover® system isn't so bad either.
Utrechtsestraat 9, 1017 CV Amsterdam

WERKPLAATS | VOLKSHOTEL
Hands down, my preferred place to grind is Volkshotel's Werkplaats in Amsterdam-Oost. It's perfect for the self-employed. It has it all - open wi-fi, outlets galore, a generous occupant capacity, an adjacent café, and it's open until the wee hours of the night - free of charge. They only request that you do not bring in outside food or drink. It's a genius business model. Werkplaats is essentially a hotel lobby converted to a shared workspace. Enclosed work cabins and conference rooms are available for rent.
